Where do I put outgoing mail on a porch mailbox?

This may seem like a dumb question...but I recently moved out of my parents house and they have always had a roadside mailbox. I live in an apartment now with the kind of mailbox that is attached to the wall. Where do I put mail that I want the mailman to take? there's no flag thingy so how will he know to take it?
