Leaving a child alone? What is acceptable?

If your child is 5 or under doing anything around the yard while they are inside is ok. Once they are about 8 and up you can go to the store across the street, and when they hit about 12 or so you can leave them at home for about 5 hours and not worry that they'll run into the street or set the house on fire.
